ALUMNI NOTES
2001 ALUMNI WEEKEND WAS CANCELLED DUE TO 9/11
Jim Seeley, Le' John Halloran, John Lucia, Don Sussman, Mike LeMay, Andy Cook and Mark Dewey never got the word and showed up and had a mini reunion. A lot of very funny stories from the 70's. I was in Japan for all 19 days of the trip and thought I knew what happened off the field. Wow - was I wrong. The troops had a much better time than the coaching staff. Crazy Loosh?
THE Chuck Ruebling '83 - selected to the NJ Lacrosse Foundation Hall of Fame for his outstanding record as the #1 coach in Joisey for many years. Congrats to "THE" on a well deserved honor.
Dr. Duane Dyson '81 - aka "Spider" is running for elected office. He should be selected to the West Orange (NJ) Township Council. Just what he needs - yet another job. If he is smart he will let his much better half and campaign manager, Diedre, do the talking during the news conferences.
Senator Michael Nozzolio '73 continues as "My kinda" elected official. He has been an outstanding leader in upstate NY since 1992. Mike came down for our Army game this fall and reminded me that while he was slow footed he remains the only defensive lineman to have scored a safety and intercepted a pass in the same game. I do remember the slow footed part. Can anyone verify the rest?
Joe Miller '62 - is doing some great work with the National Football Foundation. He is the founder and president of the Virginia Commonwealth Chapter. The organization is very active as one would expect with Joe at the helm.
Joe Polacco '66 - writes "I am no longer impressed by Fulbright Scholars since they tapped me into that august group." Joe Polacco a Fulbright scholar! Can Rick Fricke be far behind as an inductee into the CU Hall of Fame?
Scott Siler '71 has his new golf club up and running in Ft. Myers FL.
Check it out at web site: thegolfclubflorida.com
If in south Florida you are missing a great opportunity to pick a few bucks in a great $5 Nassau with Scott who gives anybody strokes.
1ST LT. Kurt Sommerhoff '97 is "shipping out" with a Marine expeditionary force and sent the following memo reference Chris Chivers '87:
KABUL, Afghanistan (Dec. 26, 2001) -- "Being here now is like a throw back to when I was a U.S. Marine," said Christopher J. Chivers.
Chivers, 37, a former infantry officer and Gulf War veteran, has been in this region since early October covering the events here as a journalist for The New York Times.
Dan (game face) Gilroy '86 IS getting married:
I have just returned from six days in the Caribbean with a lovely young lady named Shelley. I don't know if it was too much sun or too many mai tai's but I found myself whipping out a ring and proposing on Saturday night.
This is big news! The "loss" of lady killer Gilroy will make the annual and coveted "knock-out date of the alumni weekend award" much easier to win. Fino and Wheels (long time runner-ups) are probably happy but us married guys are mourning the loss of the "King".
Nolan Hecht '97 - writes:
"I hope I am not the only 50's alum seriously concerned that Izanec is a doctor?" Nolan, I am concerned not only about "ICE" but also the 60+ other former players who are doctors somewhere in this country. We might consider a medic alert button - If I am in an accident please prevent any former Cornell 150 football player from "Doctoring" me?
Dr. Bobby Detch '98 - "Ice's" former next door neighbor at left tackle also writes: "So I'm interviewing for residency in orthopedic surgery these days... I was at Yale last friday and one of my interviews was with a chief resident there named Paul Sethi, a former 150's guy. I was most pleasantly surprised to have the 150's connection come through for me on Friday."
Dr. Paul Sethi '93 - former d-tackle overcame his dislike for them "cheat'n offensive tackles" who always "hold" their far superior defensive opponents and went to bat for the rookie Detch.
Tony Avellino '88 is currently Dr. Anthony Avellino:
"an assistant professor of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins for the past year - I spend 75% of my time doing clinical pediatric neurosurgery and 25% is spent in my laboratory exploring the role that immune cells play in nerve regeneration."
More importantly - he now has some $ and sent a "CHECK" to the fund! Unlike the previously mentioned Izanec and Detch.
Penn State is know as linebacker U - this program "should be" know as Doctor U. My research leads me to believe well over 60 former players have or are working toward an M.D. degree. Problem with this is - it takes forever to get the degree and then they spend the next 10 years paying off loans sooooooo it is real tough to get "dues checks" from this bunch. MEN we can't pay the bills with degrees! Now lawyers are generally making big bucks real quick and they are real good supporters. Fortunately we have hundreds of legal types which helps keep us solvent.
Speaking of lawyers - Wheels Clemente '73 is working for Jonathan Clemente '78 as an "Of Council" whatever that is. The famous NJ lawyer working for his little bro.!!! Stay tuned.
Al Lippert '60 (QB and "retired" but has a 2nd career in teaching) wants the 1957 team photo published cause he missed the 1956 photo that I did publish due to a broken leg.
Lyle Tuthill '69
"Alls well in Brussels. I turn 55 in Feb (retirement age at P&G) and will be wrapping up this career. The fact that P&G offered a 1 yr salary package as part of their downsizing didn't hurt either. Now, time to start working on my real handicap (24 now so long way to go!)."
Tut with a club and on a golf course? Could happen as Carol, obviously much younger than her spouse will continue to bring home a paycheck.
Judge Ron Nehring '69
"I've had one hip replaced and am going in to get the matched pair next Monday. In my fully bionic condition I think that I could help at the receiver spot provided I can uncover some unused eligibility somewhere. By the way, one of my 2002 resolutions is to embrace a full fantasy life."
The "Judge" was one of the fastest players we have had in my tenure. I'd guess that with bionic hips he will really light up some 18 year old DB in the alumni game.
We have had a disturbing # of former players "downsized" out of a job. But Richie Jaso '77 has 2 jobs and will be happy to trade.
Former offensive guard Jaso: "my best to Terry, the last living member of the'flat earth society'!!!!" I still remember the former pride of Watertown as the guy who never, ever blocked Seth Lincoln and not a big deal in business as he has obviously become.
Duane Sherman '83 "What the hell happened at DU? After all, what's a little bonfire between friends?" DU fraternity is no longer.
Ira Schulamn '84
"the difference between the kids today and the guys 20 years ago is that we knew we were smarter than you but kept it to ourselves."
Nuff said.
