Summer 2001
June 2001 Reunion- A Real Good Time!
We had three guys preregister for a 2:00-4:00 p.m. event outside the office. Over 100 showed up and the event finished at the Statler bar at 11:00 p.m. Fortunately, there were several volunteers to make refreshment nms and a big donation jar so no one died of thirst.
Attendees: Fred Kaimer '51, R.aph Chierchio '82, Kim Smith'98, John Matthews '41, Gary Hardin '61, Jim Seeley '75, Jay Carter '71, Don Sussman '76, Sam Hochberger '49, Fred Kaimer '51, Dan Brammell '76, Russ Wolfe '81, John Tombari '81, Howie Floyd '81, J.W. Best Story of the Weekend: The year is 1950- Navy beats Cornell bad and rubs it in as they have been known to do .... Several members of the C.U. 150 team take a road trip to the Naval Academy, scale the wall, avoid the Marine guards and paint the Tecumseh stature CARNELLIAN RED from head to toe. The N.Y. Times reported that the FBI had been called in and an investigation was underway with arrests expected shortly. "I have been sworn to secrecy as there is no statue of limitations on crimes against the military!"
Best New Tradition: Bill Phillips '51 decided the class of '51 on their 50th should weigh-in and pay an overweight fine. They visited the scale, weighed in and wrote out some nice checks. Paid for the trip to Penn in one easy and very novel fund raiser. The class of 1952 is a big group (20 guys). If we can keep them out of the steam room and continue the tradition, next June could be a financial windfall for the program.
Cornell vs. Navy in a Bowl Game
The Pride Bowl on Sunday, October 14
1:30 kickoff in Newark, N.J.
The Pride Bowl is a major fund raising event sponsored by the city of Newark and The Star-Ledger. Last year's game provided $117,000 in college scholarship aid for 57 underprivileged high school seniors. This is a well run event, a worthy cause and coordinated entirely by volunteers. Last year's game had Army vs. Princeton. Army alumni were very supportive while Princeton had none. Cornell was invited and we have agreed to play in the Bowl game this year and I hope our large metro alumni base will help make the event a big success.
Dr. Duane "Spider" Dyson '81, his lovely wife Dicdre and Mark "Wheels" Clemente '73 are doing all the legwork for the event. Serves them right cause they live there. Plans include: a Cornell Alumni Tailgate Tent for pregame, free Cornell hats for all in attendance, kicking Navy's butt in football, and a postgame get-together with alunini, friends and players.
