Mentoring Program

Led by Sprint Alumni Board Committee, chaired by Will Edmonds ‘13

Program is heavily dependent on Linkedin and the CU Sprint Football user group.  We encourage all Sprint alumni and friends of the program to join our Linkedin user group.

Sprint Football Mentorship Program -  Process Flow

(Note: This process has not been fully implemented except steps 1, 5, 7 and 8.)

  1. Coach (TC or Bobby) announces alumni led career coaching program at first team meeting of new year (late Aug. or early Sept.).  Each player is expected to be part of program, but any player can opt out.  Each player is expected to be on Linked-in but can opt out.  Alumni will contact each player starting with seniors and working down.

  2. Mentorship committee will onboard interested alumni mentors, coaches, sponsors and career panelists through a training program to foster consistency of experience for our players.

  3. Mentorship committee will host a career panel via zoom/webinar by most popular industry groups.  These panels will be made up of 2 or 3 of our alumni.  Potential panels include: Investment Banking, Engineering, Legal, Medical, etc.

  4. Managers will enter player information into an excel spread sheet with fields similar to the excel alumni data base.  A field will be needed for the players to indicate the type of career support they are looking for (mentoring, coaching, sponsorship).

  5. First player & alum contact will be initiated by alum and be introductory in nature.  This call will determine what would be most beneficial to the player from 3 categories of: high level career coaching; mentorship in a specific career interest (e.g. investment banking); and job sponsorship for either internships or full time positions.  It is suggested that the first contact be by text message which is more likely to be read than an unrecognized phone number calling them.

  6. After initial contact alums will separate players into the 3 cohorts of: career coaching; mentorship in career fields; and sponsorship.

  7. Alum who has initial contact meeting will work with the player to identify alumni mentors and sponsors by asking: TC; using their own knowledge of their Sprint network; scans of Sprint Linked-in page and the excel alumni data base.

  8. Once candidate mentors/sponsors have been identified, the initial alum will contact these alums and verify that they will speak with the specific player.  After confirmation, alum will e-introduce player and mentor/sponsor and then step back.

  9. After a set amount of time (say 1 month) a short survey should be sent to each player to assess the process and ideas for improvement.

  10. During Spring Semester, managers will update player data base recording what each player will be doing for the summer.  They will then produce a team summary report with data on successful placements and those still wanting assistance.

  11. Each summer, the Mentorship committee will assess feedback and data from the completed Mentorship Process Flow cycle and make appropriate adjustments to the Process Flow as needed.
